Kanelbullar and a heater!

Last week I baked kanelbullar (cinnamon buns)! It took me almost a whole day but it was a lot of fun and they were very popular with everyone. My boyfriend brought some to work and he said that everyone loved them.

Kanelbullar is not difficult to make, it just takes a long time because first you make the dough and then it has to rise for about 30-45 min. Then you have to divide the dough into pieces, roll out each piece and spread butter, sugar and cinnamon on top and then create the actual bun. Then the buns have to rise again for about 30 min before they go into the oven, then the buns take about 8 min in the oven. So yes, it takes pretty much the whole day.

My kanelbullar!
Unfortunately without the classic "pärlsocker" on top because I can't find it in Colombia

Here is a recipe in English for Kanelbullar

It's been raining a lot in Bogotá for the last few days and since they don't build apartments with heating in this city we decided to buy our own heater! It's amazing! I love that I don't have to freeze inside anymore :)

Cartagena!

Me and my boyfriend just spend an amazing weekend in Cartagena!
Monday was a holiday here in Colombia (Saint Joseph's Day) so we left on Friday night and got back late last night. Cartagena is a beautiful city, it's located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. It was founded by the Spanish in the 1500s and the old city is surrounded by a big wall. It was built to protect the city from pirates. Inside the walls the houses are all in an old colonial style in many different colors. It's amazing to walk around inside the city at night or take one of the horse carriages, car traffic is very limited in the old parts of the city.

Since the city is right by the Caribbean coast it is very sunny and hot. We had about 30 degrees Celsius and light breeze for the three day we were there. During the days we swam in the pool, read some books and enjoyed just relaxing and spending time together. During the evenings we went into the old town and had some nice dinners and just walked around looking at the beautiful city. We also had great ice cream and the best coconut lemonade ever! I promise I'll try to make it in Sweden this summer :)

I love Cartagena and I would definitely recommend the city to anyone visiting Colombia!

Traffic in Bogota and Empanadas!

Last week I walked two times from the flat to my boyfriend's office and it's surprising how quick I've forgotten about the traffic in Bogota. This city is not designed for pedestrians and it's often difficult to cross the street. Most of the time there are no pedestrian crossings so you just have to run across the street when there is a gap between the cars (and no driver will ever stop for a pedestrian). Even in places where there is a pedestrian crossing and the cars have a red light you have to be very careful, because especially cab drivers seem to view the red light as more of a suggestion and they might not stop...

Other than that I love my walks in Bogota because the weather really is beautiful. Sunny and warm but not too hot. Perfect for walking in jeans, t-shirt and maybe a light cardigan. :)

Although I have to be careful and not walk too quickly because it's very easy to forget the high altitude (2600 meters above sea level) and then you'll end up not feeling well.

Yesterday me and my boyfriend went out and had empanadas for lunch, I love it! The empanadas we had are made out of a corn dough that is stuffed with a potato mix and then fried, and then you eat it with a peanut sauce, it's delicious!

I think this recipe here (in English) is very similar to the empanadas that we ate, if anyone is feeling brave enough to try it. :)

Back in Colombia!

Hello!

After spending Christmas and the beginning of the year in Sweden, I'm now back in Bogota!

I'm very happy to be back! Right now Bogota is sunny and warm, compared to this fall when it rained almost every day.

Since I don't have a job yet (and I finished my thesis in January) I mostly spend my days baking and cooking haha. I've made a swedish sockerkaka and right now there is some bread in the oven. I'm very excited because my boyfriend got me a new oven so now I can bake a lot!
